It is sad news that Tony Hillerman died yesterday. He was 83. I got to know Navajo police officers Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee through his mystery novels set primarily in New Mexico. This is his obituary in the New York Times.
big huge bummer...He was one of my college advisors I talked to him almost every day for three years...he told me one of my most often repeated quotes - I was complaining about the progress of the college magazine that I was editor of and he told me "remember, the fringe is always wider than the carpet"....
Hillerman is/was one of my literary heroes. I had family from Chinley and Espanola. His writing always stayed true both to the people and to "the people".
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow. I feel my fate in what I cannot fear. I learn by going where I cannot go.
We think by feeling. What is there to know? I hear my being dance from ear to ear. I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
Of those so close beside me, which are you? God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there, And learn by going where I have to go.
Light takes the Tree, but who can tell us how? The lowly worm climbs up a winding stair; I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
Great Nature has another thing to do To you and me; so take the lively air, And, lovely, learn by going where to go.
This shaking keeps me steady. I should know. What falls away is always. And is near. I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow. I learn by going where I have to go.

How neat that you knew him! I like that quote. I'm glad he was around as long as he was.

Wondered if he was connected to the Native American you and I discussed some years back?
