The first gold brought back by Christopher Columbus from the Americas was used to gild the ceiling of the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. The ceiling and the gold are still there today.
I didn't see this when I was in Rome. Maybe next time.

I've been to England and took a day trip to France. I was thinking when we get back to big time traveling again (apres the kids) that Rome might be on my list.
Um, then, doesn't the gold belong to us?
Maybe we could use it to fund health care reform and these shouting asshats can shut up.
You'll love that trip, FP. Italy is wonderful! We went to Lugano, Florence, Rome, Assisi, and Venice. It's a beautiful country, and I want to go back and stay longer. Do not miss going to Venice. It's an experience all its own.
maybe you could just look at a starving Latino and feel the awe.
