Elephant herds post their own sentries. Whenever danger threatens, the lookout raises its trunk, and though it may be as far as a half-mile away, the rest of the herd is instantly alerted. How this communication takes place is not understood.
Well elephants to the following in precense of danger: Alert posture standing with head raised, ears spread, tail raised, trunk raised or turned to catch scent. So here one option is the scent. When they are in fear they also:Trumpeting, screaming, growling, roaring. So option to is the sound. Probably the rest of the herd is probablly alerted by the sentries, they are probabbly recognized by their particular smell and sound from the rest.
Another theory is that elephants can give signals through vibrations which travel through the ground and other elephants can feel through their very sensitive feet. I heard it on NPR. It must be true.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow. I feel my fate in what I cannot fear. I learn by going where I cannot go.
We think by feeling. What is there to know? I hear my being dance from ear to ear. I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
Of those so close beside me, which are you? God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there, And learn by going where I have to go.
Light takes the Tree, but who can tell us how? The lowly worm climbs up a winding stair; I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
Great Nature has another thing to do To you and me; so take the lively air, And, lovely, learn by going where to go.
This shaking keeps me steady. I should know. What falls away is always. And is near. I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow. I learn by going where I have to go.
