Colorful Trivia

Flamingos are not naturally pink. They get their color from their food, tiny green algae that turn pink during digestion.

I knew this one! You can see flamingos around the world that range from orange to white, depending on their food source. I remember someone transplanted some flamingos here to KY, and was terribly disappointed that they turned an unattractive beige...

We have a flock of about two dozen making their way around town. I cracked up when I saw them on my jock neighbor's lawn. Actually they are plastic and part of a fund raising for Special Olympics. When you get them you are supposed to transport them to someone else's lawn( and of course make a donation)

One day I was driving into town past this standing water swampy area at the bottom of our hill, looked over and saw a flamingo standing all by himself in the water. Just about ran off the road. I figured someone must have planted a fake one. But came to find out that we did indeed have an escapee from the zoo in Portland, Oregon.

Many years ago a relaxing position for me was standing on one leg with the other bent out and that foot resting on the inside of the other knee. I would stand like this for some time reading, talking, etc. hence folks began to tell me I looked like a flamingo. Those days are long gone but I like the birds, especially enjoy seeing a large flock of them take off...such a colorful wave up into the sky.
