Book Questions

For those of you who have read both series, how do the Golden Compass novels compare with Harry Potter? A friend recommended Phillip Pullman's novels and said she liked them as much as she did Rowling's novels and that the characters were complex. I bought the His Dark Materials Trilogy at McKay's today while we were there and look forward to reading them. What do you think?

I read the first one to Gorilla Boy for school and Daughter read all of them. I'll ask her what she thinks.

Comparing them - hard to say - to me they are too different to compare. For some reason they (Dark Materials series) reminded me of the Wrinkle in Time series even though I read them about 35 years apart! I'll be interested in your take.

I agree with froggie! They are two completly different stories. Although I think the Golden Compass is a little darker. But movie wise, I liked Golden Compass more. It had a more elegant look and I thought the people were all more dark, the bad ones that is. And it was visually stunning.

Tina said the Dark Materials books are more complex. I'll let you know what I think after I read them. I got the DVD of the movie there while I was at it for $8 and the books were $2 each. I like McKays!

Thanks for your reviews!

Daughter at BFF's and I sent them both an email. BFF is also Emergency Back Up Daughter #2 and always is better about reading her email than Daughter.
EBD#2 says >while I enjoyed the HP series I don't consider it in the same league with DM. I do see similarities between the two, but DM is more intellectually adventurous and demands a little more from the reader than HP.<

I agree with Joy. They are more complex, both to read and the story.

What brought it up is that Janey said since I liked the Harry Potter books so much, that I would really like the Golden Compass ones. After what all of you have said, I'm sure that's right. Thanks!

Hi Joy, I agree with Froggie and Mistress Maddie. They are both in different leagues, but both are a good series to read if you have not read them. The DM trilogy is darker, but I preferred the writing style and story. The Harry Potter series took a while for me to get into them(because the first books were written for small children), but it matures well. I love the characters and worlds of both. Hope that helps some.
