The Brooklyn Dodgers (who later became the Los Angeles Dodgers) did not get their name because of their sporting ability. The term dodger was a shortened form of the term trolley dodgers, which was first used to describe Brooklynites for their ability to avoid being hit by trolley cars.
Reminds me of a flirtation I had in high school with a life guard. We were in the lake under the pier. He was trying to kiss me, and I deflected it and said, "I'm a Dodger fan." His retort was, "I'm a Yankee fan, and they always win." And he did. (Actually I was a Yankee fan, too, but I never let the facts get in the way of a one-liner, so that was win-win.)
