Gandhi

There's a line from an old blues song: "Been down so long it looks like up to me." We've been ruled by evil cartoon characters so long that it can feel like we have finally made it out to a sensible reality. It's good to enjoy some refreshing changes in the tone coming out of the national microphone but we would be wise to keep our ear on the content and not just the tone. This is a good time to make it clear that we are not interested in continuing on the same road of expanding wars, endless detention, impunity for crimes and bottomless handouts to bankers that we have put up with for years. Been there. Done that. It takes a lot of noise and some action to boot, to make for meaningful change.

A part of change that may seem small, is nonetheless important. Let folks know how you feel. About whatever moves you. Put your message out. A handmade sign on you lawn or in your window; a collection of political buttons to switch out on your clothes; maybe buttons of your own design to hand out to friends. Every time you break a silence you are opening space for others who feel the same way but feel too timid to stick their neck out first.

"This is a good time to make it clear that we are not interested in continuing on the same road of ... impunity for crimes and bottomless handouts to bankers that we have put up with for years."And yet, we've gotten more of that in the last 4 months than we ever got in the last 8 years. In fact, all this crap started getting ramped up when the Dems won the Congress in '06 and boy, are they running with it! The politics of the next two to four years scares the hell out of me. Obama will need to keep in mind something pertinent that Margaret Thatcher said, "The bad thing about socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money."

That line seems to sum it up nicely.

Is Debi serious?

Your Gandhi quote reminded me of my job search!

Unfortunately, she is not being Steven Colbert here. Also being Southern didn't overcome her political views since she doesn't thank people for gifts.

Sorry, Zen! I hope that changes soon. That has to be scary.

Yes, it does, Bob, and I thought about several things that applies to as well. :-)

Joy, I was certain that I had thanked you for the candy. Several times, in fact. If I did not, that was a serious oversight on my part and I apologize. Thank you for bringing it to my (and all of your other readers') attention...

My pointing that out in front of others was a much bigger breach of etiquette and reflects badly on me, not you, Debi. I apologize for that.

I didn't write all that under the poster but got it from Northland and gave them credit. I agree with it and am worried about the economy along with everyone else. I can see and comment on what I like and dislike about political leaders of any party and don't blindly love or hate them like Elisabeth Hasselbek does. I want them to go after the tax evasion that these corporations are doing, which would get money into the economy when they finally pay taxes. There also needs to be regulation and control over the money they got and are using irresponsibly. It's such a mess and will take a long time to get out of.

No worries. I thought about my lack of gratitude to you all day today, and realized that maybe I'd spent so much time telling my friends here about how much I appreciated the lovely lady in TN who sent me candy (EVERYONE is jealous of me :) ) that I forgot to tell YOU.

I knew that you did not write that copy (or assumed it was from the link you shared). It just really irks me that everyone wants to blame Bush for this economy (and yeah, he didn't help--he could have stood stronger), but the fact is that the President has no real power to appropriate funds--that is the purview of the Congress and Senate. Those branches have had nearly unassailable Democrat power for the last 2 1/2 years. And now Obama has sent up a budget that will more than dwarf what Bush ever put forth. But yet people still want to blame the Republicans. Frankly, I'm no fan of the spineless Republicans myself, and am this close to changing my registration to Libertarian...

Anyway, all that just to say that I didn't mean anything personal against you by my comments.

I got here long after all of you. this is a good post to step on one's own tongue on. I too wonder what in hell happened to those anti trust laws way back in my youth when some of these mergers were stopped before big business got too big? Now nobody knows who the parent company is of the parent company. I'm beginning to suspect that it's my barber down the road who secretly owns everything. He did after all rent the other half of his little downtown building to an oil company.

Good, Debi! My mother and Miss Manners would have been appalled by my calling you out like that! Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed them.
