The Germans considered Casablanca (1943) a propaganda film and made it illegal to show it in German theaters during World War II. Even after the war, only a censored version was allowed to be shown in Germany; all references to Nazis were removed.
Casablanca won the Oscar for Best Picture the year I was born.
Tom Jones won when my daughter was born.
Midnight Cowboy was the winner the year my son was born.
Which film won the year you were born?

Oooh Midnight Cowboy was a great movie!
Oddly enough, The Sting was the winner for my birth year, 1973. Sting happens to be my favorite singer.
Around the World in 80 Days.
(which I saw a loooong time ago).
Twins bday - The Color Purple.
GB's bday - Born on the 4th of July
Haven't seen either of those.
In The Heat of the Night - which I've never seen.
XOXOXOXOXO
Mrs Minnever. ( 1942)..I know absolutely nothing about it.
It wouldn't open for me, so as usual, I am clueless!
Sheena
Mine was one called The Apartment. Never heard of it...
Charlie, Greer Garson was in Mrs. Minnever. That's all I remember about it even though I've seen it a long time ago.
Debi, I've seen The Apartment. It's good. Shirley MacLaine and Jack Lemmon are in it.
FP, did you read The Color Purple? The movie followed it really well and had some good performances in it. Whoopi was an excellent Celie. Born on the Fourth of July was a powerful anti-war movie about the real life of Ron Kovic (also a book). You probably knew all this, but both movies are worth seeing.
I loved The Sting! Paul Newman and Robert Redford in another buddy movie because I also loved Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid!
Did you see the TV series In the Heat of the Night, David? Carol O'Connor was so good in that. Rod Steiger and Sidney Poitier were in the movie. You can imagine how good it was.
1946 - The Lost Weekend starring Ray Milland and Jane Wyman. Directed by Billy Wilder.
Never saw the movie. I'll ask hubby to see if Netflix carries it.
I remember The Sting. Wonderful movie with Newman and Redford, 2 of my fave actors of all time.
Just a lil' side note, because I'm a nerd, The Color Purple and Born on the Fourth of July both lost their years. The Oscars went to Out of Africa and Driving Miss Daisy.
Right you are, my little Oscar savant! :-)
1941 - "How Green was My Valley" - Darryl Zanuck, Producer; John Ford, Director; Philip Dunne, Writer; starred Maureen O'Hara, Walter Pidgeon, Roddy McDowall, and others. It was nominated for 10 Acadamy Awards and won 5, beating out the classics "Citizen Kane" "The Maltese Falcon" and "Sgt.York." In 1990 it was selected for preservation in the US National Film Register by the Library of Congress, being culturally, historically, and/or aesthetically significant. It is a socio-economic way of life story of the family Morgans, hard working Welsh family set in the South Wales Coal Fields and the South Wales Valley. I saw it several times and liked it - it had more meaning when I saw it at an older age and on TV. While living in Nashville and Dad was in WWII my mother and aunt and I went to the movie theater every weekend so I saw most all movies during those years. It also was a way to keep up with the current news. The newsreels and comics were as exciting as the movies.
