Ringo Starr started out as Richard Starkey. While Starkey was in the band Skiff le, their front man Rory Storm dubbed him Rings because he wore so many rings. Storm eventually changed the nickname to Ringo to give it a cowboy flavor.
Thanks, DG! I don't check this stuff out I get from "Useless Knowledge" on iGoogle unless it seems too far-fetched. I depend on readers like you who know stuff! Thanks for the interesting correction! I appreciate it. This makes the cowboy reference make sense now.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow. I feel my fate in what I cannot fear. I learn by going where I cannot go.
We think by feeling. What is there to know? I hear my being dance from ear to ear. I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
Of those so close beside me, which are you? God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there, And learn by going where I have to go.
Light takes the Tree, but who can tell us how? The lowly worm climbs up a winding stair; I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
Great Nature has another thing to do To you and me; so take the lively air, And, lovely, learn by going where to go.
This shaking keeps me steady. I should know. What falls away is always. And is near. I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow. I learn by going where I have to go.

And the rest is history! Love him as a drummer! and of course as pat of that well known band from Liverpool!
Slight correction: the band wasn't called Skiff Le, it was a skiffle band. The band was actually called The Raving Texans.

No problem! I'm sort of a fan of the jug band sound, so that leads to knowing about skiffle. I did have to look up the real name of the band, though.
