Odd Sacrifice Trivia

During World War II, on January 18, 1943, bakers in the United States were ordered to stop selling sliced bread for the duration of the war. Only whole loaves were made available to the public. It was never explained how this action helped the war effort.

And less than nine months later, I was born.

  2. Maybe it was done to keep women so busy slicing bread that they couldn't have sex with their husbands and get pregnant.

Obviously, your Mom and Dad marched to their own drummer!

  3. I can't imagine the thought behind this....

  4. Maybe it had to do with saving metal for the war effort.

  5. That might be it, SB. I've been trying to figure that out. Thanks!

  7. Maybe that's the genesis of the phrase, "best thing since sliced bread"...

  8. You're good, Snowbrush! Thanks for looking that up!

Yes, I'm pretty sure that expression originated with my birth. That's what it says on the commemorative plaque in the town where I was born.

  9. Joy: "I'm pretty sure that expression originated with my birth."

Oh, yeah, like you, the expression is WAY older than WWII, eh Joy.

  10. You haven't figured out by now that I go for the joke whenever I get the chance? Don't you have a sense of humor?

And I am not older than WWII. Check the original post and do the math. You really know how to make a woman feel better, don't you?

  11. Btw, I'm sure Debi knew I was making a joke. She and I both enjoy British humor.

  14. I did in fact know that that was a joke. In fact, I expected you would go there, and would have been disappointed if you hadn't.

Snowbrush: Joy older than WWII? Wow, even I wouldn't have touched that one... :D

  15. I confused Joy with a blog buddy who was 75 yesterday. WWII ended 64 years ago.

  16. As hard as I try, I cannot come up with a link between non-sliced bread and your conception.

  17. Ms. Moon: "I cannot come up with a link between non-sliced bread and your conception."

The time that her parents saved by NOT having to slice their bread gave them time for, well, you know, and Joy was the result.

  18. Yes, but it started 70 years ago, so I'd have to be over 70 to be older than WWII. Your comment made it worse.

I was hoping you'd go there with the sliced bread, Debi! Thank you for the bantering. Guess we got in that habit on Scaryduck's blog all these years.

  19. It's a non sequitur, Ms. Moon, and apparently a lame attempt at being humorous.

  20. FYI I post about your trivia in my blog.
