Comedian/actor Billy Crystal portrayed Jodie Dallas, the first openly gay main character on network television, on ABC’s Soap, which aired from 1977 to 1981. Various church groups protested the seeming "acceptance" of homosexuality.
I always wanted to wave my hands back and forth, and seem invisible too. This may sound really odd, but I remember wondering why some of my family made fun of Jodie.
Good God, I remember all that, and the nonsense that ensued. But it was a great show, with many landmark moments.
